It is true, you can't go wrong with anything Yamaha® makes, because they make everything well. Why? Because it's easy to recommend Yamaha®, they make a pretty good version of any instrument. Band directors who are unfamiliar with flute-only brands will tend to recommend Yamaha® for any instrument they are unfamiliar with. It takes a long time for reputations to change, even when they are untrue. The Gemeinhardt is seen as a cheaper option, a rough and ready flute for a careless beginner. It is more expensive, and still highly in demand right now. Most people still believe that the Yamaha® is a better flute. I'd like to share with you my observations and my opinions, as a professional flute player, teacher, and repairman. As a professional flute player, I also attend all of the flute conventions regularly, and try every flute on the market, to stay updated on quality. I have memorized the ins and outs of them and have come to recognize patterns relating to common problems as well as relative strengths of quality and durability. As a flute repairman I have examined hundreds of Yamaha® and Gemeinhardt flutes, taking them apart, fixing them, and playing them. So, I've decided to share my opinions and experiences on the matter, and to keep this article up to date to adjust for any changes.
